    How to pack a CPU

Hi I bought a used AMD Athlon processor on ebay and installed it in a new motherboard but it wouldn't boot only the cpu fan running and display would not switch on . After checking the connections replaced the cpu with an old athlon xp 2000+ that I thought was unstable but it booted and ran for a few hours .

The CPU I bought was wrapped in bubble wrap first then put in to an antistatic bag could the bubble wrap have caused a problem or was it packed correctly.

I have sent a message to the seller and he has given the option of refund or a replacement. I have accepted a replacement and sugested how I would have packed it.

Wrapping a sensitive component in something BEFORE placing it in anti-static packaging is a very unusual practice. In fact, in your case, it probably makes the anti-static bag a waste of time because the CPU will be getting static directly off of the bubblewrap that it's touching!

Common practice is either to place a CPU in a small anti-static bag and then wrap the bag in protection such as bubblewrap or, alternatively, to place a CPU onto a purpose-made CPU-sized plastic tray, secured by a strong elastic band so that it doesn't move and then put that into an anti-static bag and more protective packaging.

I have told the seller about this and he agrees that it was most likely the packaging as he has had another CPU returned so I have got a full refund .

Two good things have come out of this the seller now knows about the problem and I have tested an old CPU that I was about to throw out and it appears to be stable .
