DVD CD RW Drive wont recognize blank disk

I have a Toshiba Satellite A15-S129 Laptop. I've encountered a strange problem with my DVD-CD-RW Drive. I want to copy one of my DVDs that has a lot of graphics on it, that's probably why they use DVD disks, because of the size of the data on that disk.

Well I put a new Memorex DVD-R in the drive and the computer says it is unable to recognize it, says it may be corrupted or not formated for my computer. I put another new Memorex in and got the same result, then I put a Philips DVD-R in and still get the same reply.

Anything else that I put in that drive works fine, CDs with music, playing DVD movies and DVDs with lots of graphics, like the one I'm trying to copy, they work just fine. As far as formating the blank disk, I don't seem to be able to make that happen.

    Help help

I was asked what OS I have Windows XP and as far as I know the burning software is part of the XP operating system.

Who would guess, since in your original post, you didn't say what OS you're with.

Now...DVD-R disks don't need any formatting, so it must be something else, which prevents your DVD drive from recognizing DVD-R disks.

How old is your DVD drive? Some time ago, some drives would read only DVD-R disks, some others only DVD+R disks, but I doubt this is a case.

What is exact message displayed by your computer, when you put blank DVD into your drive?

Download Nero CD-DVD Speed from here: http://www.cdspeed2000.com/ to test your drive.

The message that the computer gave me is in the second paragraph. As far as the formating I mentioned that because that was one of the things that the computer stated along with a possibility that the disk may be corrupted and as far as that goes I tried two more new disks from different manufacturers with the same result.

I think, I got confused, because:
Windows XP can read and play back DVDs, but it can't record them

There we go. I went to that Microsoft site and garnered lots of information, thanks a lot for pointing me in the right direction, I guess if I just took more time to read about all these things I'd have less trouble.

    Thanks again. Wagoosh
