I have bought a Maxtor 400GB external hard drive, but when i connect the drive to the computer via USB and click on my computer, there is no extra hard drive showing, i want to be able to transfer files because i am short of memory on my computer.

Did you initialize/format the drive? If not you need to.

Right click My Computer then click Manage then Disk Management.

Right click the drive here and choose Format... NTFS
