Thumbs down Shrinking page on Monitor. HELP

I have a KDS monitor that is 6 years old. I think it is a CRT monitor. Last week the page on the monitor suddenly shrunk on both sides leaving a third of the monitor on both sides black. The top and the bottom of the page was also cut off. So the only way that I could turn off the computer was to push the buttom on the computer. About 2 days later it did it again and has continued to do so about everyday since then. Is it the monitor or a problem with the computer? Please help.

Can you get into Safe Mode?

I suppose I can. My computer works fine until the monitor goes haywire.

The point would be if your monitor works OK in Safe Mode we can probably suspect a driver problem.

If you have the same problem in Safe Mode then we would suspect a hardware problem.

Safe Mode is a diagnostic tool.

I tried running in Safe Mode and the monitor worked fine. But it doesn't do it all the time. That's why I was wondering if something was getting weak. Like I said it happens all of a sudden. But when I turn off the computer and turn it back on, it will work OK for the rest of the day. It happens whether I'm on the internet or not. So far it's only doing it once a day. But I would like to find out the cause before it completely craters out.

It could be any number of things.

If it is sporadic after extended periods of being OK it could be a heat problem with the graphics card.

Have you ever cleaned the inside of your computer?

It could also be a driver problem.

Do you know what graphics card you are using?

Just as an aside a 6 year old piece of hardware is probably due to be replaced.

I clean the inside of my computer about every 6 months. The last time was about 2 months ago when I added more ram. I'm not sure but looking at the manual,I think the graphics card is a NVIDIA RIVA TNT@ Model 64/Model 64 Pro. It came with the computer and I know little about what's in it. You are probably right, I need a new computer but I would like to keep this one running as long as I can.

I would not blame the entire computer.

The main suspects are the monitor itself or the graphics card. From what you mention it is embeded in the motherboard.

What is the make and model of the computer?
