    Safe Mode Problems

    Toshiba Satellite P105-S6104 notebook
    Dual core processor-centrino
    Intel Core 2 duo T5200
    1.6 Hz, 2MB L2, 533 Hz FSB
    10 GB PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM
120 GB 5400-rpm SATA hard drive

    Problem:
My laptop computer goes into safe mode when accessing the very high graphic high memory demanding online program called Second Life. Most of the time this happens when I have Yahoo Messenger active. However, it does not happen each time. It also occurs when Yahoo messenger is not active.

In safe mode I try to shut down with no success usually and usually I have to just turn off power.

I have removed a lot of unnecessary programs including Spybot. I have a minimum running at start up.

AVG virus protection is running and no viruses are on the machine. I also have Pitstop's Optimize 1.5 and have run through the tests, including the online tests. Online tests said my cache was too full. This I contribute to Second Life and now I empty the second life cache daily. No other major problems found at pcpitstop.com.

It has currently been scanned and defragmented

I have called the Toshiba help line and talked with someone whose only advice was to run the restore disc.

Is there any other possible solutions to this problem. Any recommendation will be greatly appreciated.

Hi (or should I say "How!"? ) Chief and welcome to D-A-L!

Please explain what you mean by it "goes into safe mode". Note that Safe Mode is accessed during the boot process and is a "maintenance mode" for the Windows operating system. Does your computer suddenly reboot, going into Safe Mode at that time?

I note that some programs have a safe mode - but that is entirely different from the computer going into safe mode.

    Also, you said,
Most of the time this happens when I have Yahoo Messenger active
    Then you said,
It also occurs when Yahoo messenger is not active.
That to me eliminates Yahoo Massager from the equation.

You also said you have "10 GB PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM" - 10Gb? - Not likely! Did you mean 1Gb?
If 1Gb, it is likely you are running out of RAM as the vast majority of laptops do not have a dedicated graphics card. That means some system RAM is snatched away from the CPU and Windows and used to process graphics. You should consider increasing your RAM to 2GB. My standard recommendation for RAM these days is 1Gb per core minimum.

I have called the Toshiba help line and talked with someone whose only advice was to run the restore disc.
Typical cop-out! You can always spot a stupid amateur - they immediately suggest a restore, format, or reinstall of Windows. We were all amateurs at one time and that's okay, but an amateur that immediately recommends what, in all other cases, would be considered "last ditch efforts", is simply stupid. To be fair to that individual, I must assume that course of action is a Toshiba policy - Toshiba should be ashamed.

I am in a program called Second Life (SL)
which draws a lot of memory, all of a sudden the laptop goes into the safe mode. In order to get out I have to shut down and come back up. It normally occurs when I have both SL and Yahoo messenger or another program up, but not all the time.

You simply said the same thing you said in your first post! You did not explain what you mean by safe mode and you did not answer my questions. I can't read minds here, dude!

There are many safe modes, but once again, when one mentions "Safe Mode", this typically refers to when the OS boots into a maintenance mode where only the minimum number of drivers and startup programs are loaded, and most custom settings are disabled.

What Safe Mode are you talking about? Is this a safe mode within Second Life? How much RAM do you really have? Is your system suddenly rebooting?

What version of Windows? Note that according to Second Life here,
NOTE: Second Life does NOT currently support Windows Vista
    ...their bold, not mine.

Just another note regarding Second Life: it was not designed for multi-core processors.

Many find it works better if you set its' "Affinity" to a single core.

To do this open the Task Manager and right click Second Life then "Set Affinity..."

Unfortunately you have to do this every time the program is started.
