buying a laptop- what to look out for.
So- some of you may have read my previous posts on my kaput laptop. it looks likely i will need a new one.
what sort of thing should i be looking out for (want to spend about £450 max)
can you get laptops with built in wireless stuff nowadays?
A CD/DVD rewriter would be good too.
cheers

Hey!
I don't think you can find a laptop without the built-in wifi stuff and a cd-rw (writer). Assuming that 450.00 GBP = 919.127 USD you have a pretty wide selection of good machines out there. The first few questions you should answer:
- are you buying the computer in UK or USA? (sorry for my confusion)
- what will be the primary use of the laptop (web browsing, e-mails, gaming, photo/video editing, programming, etc?)
- if more than one user what will they be doing on it?
- are you going to travel with it and use it on the road? (smaller, lighter = better for travel)
- do you have any specific preference that should be applied right away? (Intel/AMD processor, not less than 2GB ram, not less than 80GB HDD, etc?)
If you could just post the answers and we will keep on going with the customization process :]
Cheers!

ok the best processor would be duals. thats what i use an i game with my computer. I have a ATI catalyst..lol i forget which one it is. But what brand, if your looking by brand, are you looking for. As far as your wb browsing, (if your looking for speed) it will depend on your ISP conncection, as in cable connection, dsl dialup etc... i personally use cabel, but since your in th UK, i dont know what the best ISP is over there. I use COMCAST cable. So look around the available ISPs and see what connection is the fastest. As far web browsers, i use plain old IE, but others would tell you FIREFOX is the best, which i dont know but they can xplain firefox to you in more detail, i hope this helps.

If you are not traveling with this computer, then do you really need a laptop?
Laptops are:- more expensive to buy,
- more difficult and expensive to repair,
- limited expansion capability,
- limited upgrade capability,
- on-board graphics,
- more heat related issues (especially with demanding games),
- easier to steal,
- and, as you have seen, when they fail, you have to replace the whole thing - including monitor, keyboard, opticals, etc.
In spite of what laptop makers tell you, laptops are not built for gaming. They are portable business computers used for office productivity and PowerPoint type presentations. Running 3D animated games is one of the most demanding tasks asked of a computer. Therefore heat management is paramount. However, because the electronics are confined to such a small compact space, cooling capabilities are very limited. Extended exposure to higher temperatures ages electronics faster than similar components maintained at normal temperatures.
The only real advantage to laptops for non-road warriors is you can easily lock the entire computer up in a secure closet or cabinet when not in use.
Unless you need a laptop for work or school, I strongly recommend you consider a PC.

Duals meaning- 1 of each? how does it work?
is this more expensive?
I 'travel' about 5 minutes down the road with it where i go gaming- so i DO need one...
cheers for postings.

How does this look:

better with vista or XP? Ive not used vista yet!

ok dual processors are two processors lol. But yea it may be more expensive, but since youll be doing alot of gamin, it would be worht the extra cash. all it does is give you more power to run applications faster. another thing to add, i HIGHELY recommend this, get a cooling pad. This will seriously cool down your laptop which make your processors run faster. and as far as the wireless internet, wifi is a good choice. you can pick up any network (if in range) with your wifi signal. As long as you legally do it. ask permission first thou otherwise...it would be illegal...and we dont like to be illegal (that was to all you limewire users out there
).

oh btw the 6400, thats the one i have. I found that it is a very nice system. If you get the 6400, youll automatically receive the dual core processors if you choose. so yea, the 6400, if thats the one your planning on getting, would be a nice choice. As far as the money goes...i live in the US so i dont know dollars to pound conversions.
