i haven't built it yet, but that is an excellent point!

The XP pro that i have been using for all these years is not going to work for sure and certain.

I will begin getting a new operating system that is 64 bit. Hopefully i can score one that is close to XP pro.

I do Not ever want to go to Vista.
    ------------
Actually the only reason that i posted was to try to help the other people with a esc board problem and also to confirm that there actually is a ESC KV2 lite version with the EXTREME label in the model number.

The memory i have chosen is OCZ ( OCZ4002048ELDCPE-K ) this is a 2 Gig dual channel set and I believe that two of these sets will operate well with this board. maxing it out. there will be no more memory upgrades available.

Thanks for your post! I bet you i would have forgotten all about that 64 bit OS thing when it came right down to it and I would be scratching my head and wasting time wondering why my reg 32 bit was not working correctly.

You're welcome unfortunately vista's 64 bit version is suppose to be better than XP's 64-bit version when it comes to hardware compatibility. Personally I've barely used Vista 64-bit but I have had XP 64-bit on my computer to experiment with and I have had some problems with it. Mainly driver related. I could not get it to use my wireless adapter for example. Again I don't know if vista 64 bit is better. I do believe that 32 bit operating systems can use 3 gig. Of course there is always a 64 bit version of Linux.

As for helping the other people that is noble but you must not have noticed that the last post was in june of '07.

Windows 7 will be released in October with both 32 and 64 bit options.

Windows 7 32 bit sees and uses a full 4GB RAM.

The thing with XP 64 was it was a server OS so no one was ever overly interested in drivers a server would not require.

How can windows 7 32-bit see 4 gig and vista's can't? Isn't that a limitation to the 32 bit architecture and memory addressing? Are you sure?

I am sure as I am running it.

It has been reported that Vista is the same but in Windows 7 the detection code has been updated.

    Naw - I noticed -

This is an old board. LOL not alotta people are going to need that info at all really. these boards 9 for some reason) are still being sold for around 59 bucks though.

They are cool looking and i am hoping the problems with them are over exaggerated.

Vista is a HOG and has way too many things involved in it that i would never use nor want to use. Part of the reason you need more memory to run it.

i haven't tried the xp 64 yet so i cannot comment on yet.

who knows. I might dig it better.

I have XP 64-bit and an amd athalon 64 x2 processor and like I said I've had driver issues but I have it just have to experiment with and I don't actually depend upon it. The question isn't whether or no it will use your processor and more in will it use your network card, chipset, sound, etc for your computer to really be functional. I suggest that you take a list of your hardware and find out if there are drivers for it first. Even if you do in my experience they don't necessarily work.

I hope this doesn't mean what I think it means.

unfortunately vista's 64 bit version is suppose to be better than XP's 64-bit version when it comes to hardware compatibility.
Unfortunately? XP is pushing 9 years old - and was developed when users were still demanding 16-bit support!
The question isn't whether or no it will use your processor and more in will it use your network card, chipset, sound, etc for your computer to really be functional.
Not exactly. Motherboards and CPUs have supported 64-bit operating systems for years. Even Newegg's cheapest AMD motherboard has 64-bit drivers on their site. If a company wants to put "Vista Capable" on their product, as motherboard makers do, they must make 64-bit drivers available. I applaud Microsoft for pushing that. Win7 will carry on with that, but also, as expected, will provide better support for today's hardware.

So the problem is not so much with hardware integrated on motherboards - but driver support for 3rd party hardware and all your favorite programs. There is little incentive for companies to staff two versions when 64-bit is not in wide use, and 32-bit programs can run fine (in most cases) on 64-bit systems.

So if you stick with major hardware brands, and current models, 64-bit support is not going to be difficult. The issue becomes whether or not your favorite programs come in 64-bit versions.

Pertaining drivers I was referring to xp 64-bit because that is what he said that he now has.
