Computer wont start, not even the bios

    my comp
    intel pentium d 3.20g
    MSI pm8pm-v main board
    ultra 600 watt power supply

I had been having some over heating issues when playing games, My system temp was low but my cpu was running high. so i upgraded the heat sink.
The comp worked fine for about 24 hours until i tryed to switch from my usb mouse and keyboard to my wireles mouse and key board. with the power on i plugged in the wireless combo(USB) and then unplug the ones with wire before noticing that there was no power to my wireless hub to detect the mouse and bored so i tred to plug the the other 2 back in, but i was getting no response so i had to press the power switch to reset.

When i did this the computer started to boot normally but i coulod only see a small horsontal line of my desktop once windows loaded. so i rebooted again, this time i got nothing, i couldnt even gett to the bios i just recieved a black screen. after waiting an hour or so and trying again

the fan were all spinning and i could here the Ide drives, but it never started to count my ram. so i disasemled every thing, i took the mother board out and i took the ram and the cpu out as well. Then i put it all back to gether but this time i put some old ram that i had in it and i left out the video card (i used the on board video instead) and i didnt hook up the IDE drives. I treid to start it again and boom it fired right up and went as fare as it could with out the drives. i rebooted and wanting to make a change to the bios before i pluged in the ide drive but i forgot to plug in the key board so i rebooted again but this time i got a black screen. after waitnig a while and trying again with the same results i wanted to reset the cmos but i couldnt find my mother board book and i didnt recal which pins to jump. so i took out the batery and stuck it back in after aqbout 30seconds, this changed nothing. So i took it apart again but this time i never took out the cpu nore did i take off the heat sink and i put it all back together and tried it again and got the same black screen. So i took the ram out and put the first ram back in and this time it started up i tried to get in to the bios but i was hitting the key on the wrong board and i missed my opertunity and had to reboot, only to get a blank screen again and the comp never counted out the ram. i tried taking it aprt again, levaving the cpu in, no luck, i went back to the other ram chip(the second one) and i got a serries of beeps and a black screen, i went back the original ram and i get the same blank screen but no beeps, all so i did figure out how to reset my cmos and that didnt help and i triple check all my wieing and conection and found no problems

Any one know what happed to my comp? oh and i checked the monitor, its fine

    Complex and confusing issues.

Here is a MSI troubleshooter for what it is worth:

    http://www.msicomputer.com/support/sup_tshoot.asp

You should be able to find the manual here:

    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloadindex

Are you sure there are no shorts anywhere? Have you tried booting the board outside of the case? Are you sure the PSU is solid? Do you have a different CPU to try?

If you try to boot without any RAM does it BEEP?

I found the problem and boy do i fell retarded now. I have a large trunk filled with spare parts some new some old, i took a almost new mouse out of the trunk to use with this comp. it was a usb mouse with a serial adapeter and i pluge the purple peg in to the purple hole with out ever even giving it a thought. I had log since forgotten that a comp wont start if you plug the mouse in to the keyboard port. It seems the adapter origanilly came with a keyboard. lol

Cool! Glad all is well. Thanks for the update.

    Have the CPU temps improved?

the cpus temps did and didnt improve. My idel temp went from about 50c to about 60c, however it did not come up much when put under heavyload, i went from crashing every time i put my cpu underlaod to crashing about twice a day.

In upgrading the heatsink did you clean and the reapply a good thermal compound?

I would only want to see 50c > 60c under very heavy load.

Idle should be 40c or less.

Ok , new problem the machine is dead again. I was just surfing the web and my comp shut of and does nothing on boot. The fan on the power supply wont even spin but it will only spin if it is under load right, so if the board is dead will it wont spin right?

I have a ultra 600 watt ATX power supply

The manual has this so say under the protection section
"If the power supply latches into shutdown stage (when over current, oer voltage or short circuit protection is working), the power supply shall return to normal operation only after the fault has been removed and re-applied."

What causes over voltage? A short?
How do I know if the problem is the board or the power supply?
If the CPU dies will it do anything? Would it at least beep at me?
There is no on board led.

Just for the record i tried it using a know working power cord and outlet as well and it changed nothing.

Im out of ides any help would be greatly appreciated.

in response to the heat sink i cleaned every thing very well with compressed air i used the thermal greas that cam iwth it (sooy i dont know the name)
and i was unhappy with my results so i tried just some radio shack past, that seemed to help it a little, the name of the heatsink was Zerotherm cf900
it had great review, but i was dissapionted i didnt wont to see temps as high as i did, but it now looks as if i may have had a short some where in the computer so maybe it is a better sink than i think it is, it was $30, before a $10 rebate. from eggbert or something like that
