    Bios message

Well Guys, this is one I just cannot get my head around. I did get the bsod, and repaired the system. But each time , as before , in the bootup, I get a message telling me Fast track does not had a Bios, or No Bios installed. I cannot understand it.I am using :
Asus socket 754 MB K8V SE Delux
    Amibios ver : 08.00.09
    I D A0058002.

Now when I used a little program , called MBID , it stated the Mbios was Ver rev 2.00, and it was a www.nec.com Bios.
    Serial number : MB1234567890.
I would appreciate any help any one could give me on this, please.

    Cheers.

    Win XP Home
    AMD Athlon 64 3000. 2 Mhz
    1 Gig Ram 3200x 400
    200 Gig HD
    Soundblaster Sound card
    FX6800 Nvidia Graphics Card

Did you reload the Promise controller drivers? (press F6 during OS install?) If not using that controller, disable it in the BIOS.

I disabled the promise part and also the raid but the raid keeps popping up in the device manager. I also notice I crash and freeze when I am in a game, like joint Ops , after the first half hour. Not sure if both problems are connected.

Keeps popping up in device manager? What do you mean? Does it indicate an error. Do you still get an error during boot.

Crash and freeze after an hour is a sure sign of overheating. Check your temps, make sure the inside of the case is clean of dust, make sure all fans spin properly, and consider adding an additional fan to the case - you want to strive for good front to back air flow. 120mm fans are better than the common 80mm fans found on most cases.

Yes, I still get this message when booting :Fast track , No Bios installed. The ones that keep appearing in the Modem slot of System properties, I Uninstall them and leave just the one on, I use for my SB4200 Cable modem. It is not Ethernet though. These are are the ones which come up,1394 Network adapter, and Marvel Yukon Gigabit ethernet adapter. it would appear that it migh be faster than the other cable adapter, but it never seems to work when I try it. I might get a new Ethernet cable to try out, as it keeps saying, cable not connected.
I will try the suggestions you mentioned as soon as possible

    You have multiple problems here.

When you get the fast track error, does the boot process stop, or keep going? If you are not using that controller, you should be able to disable it in the BIOS, and uninstall the drivers in device manager. This should stop the promise popups.

You never mentioned anything about cable modem issues before. That would have nothing to do with your network connection.

I don't like connecting to network devices via USB. Going Ethernet is much less problematic in most cases - and faster.

And again, freezing after 1/2 hour is something else too.

No, it does not stop, at the moment. Ok, it could be I am not stopping the correct controllers in the bios. I will have another look in there.

Sorry about the multiple problems and questions. You have been very patiant with me, and I really appreciate it. The freezing starts after been in a game for that time, but it does not happen when not playing a game. I honestly think you are 100% correct regarding going Ethernet rather than USB Modem connection. It is just when I do try using the Ethernet, it staes no connection or cable loose. Hence the idea I have of buying a new Ethernet cable asap.
At this moment in time, I am not too sure if there is another three pin connection on the Motherboard for a extra fan. If there is, I have missed it. I am using a 754 socket motherboard. I just wondered what you think, of the Paging File Cache. I am allowing Min : 2301 MBs and Max :4602. My total RAM is now 1 and a half Gig.

    All the best.

You can use a power supply connector to add a fan. Y-adapters can be used as a splitter easily if needed.

Ethernet cables are cheap - in fact, your ISP may have a box of them at the customer service counter and give one to you. It may not fix your problem but that is one area that can be easily eliminated from the equation.

I think your Page file is WAY too big. When you have 1Gb or more, XP should barely need to touch the Page File, if at all.

Start Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt Delete) and click on the Performance tab. Look at Commit Charge (K).
Total = amount of memory currently using
Limit = RAM + Page File
Peak = the maximum amount of memory your system has used since last reboot
If the peak never exceeded the amount of RAM you have installed, then you don't really need a Page File. However, XP expects to see one, so you must have one but it can sure be a lot smaller than you have now. I would set it no more than 1024 for the initial and 1024 for the max. Having them both the same sets a "fixed" size Page File and that helps minimize fragmentation problems.

Blasting a desk fan into the open computer to see if it still freezes can help in determining the problem.

Hi Dig, I managed at last, to get the Ethernet cable working and I do believe it is faster. I also put a fan in. I will now do as you suggested re the paging file size. Thank you so much for all your help.
    All the best.

Great. Glad it is all going. If you have two hard drive, putting the page file on the second drive provide a little performance boost. Though not necessary if you have lots of free space, I still recommend deleting all temp files and running defragging before setting up the PF. CCleaner is a great disk cleaning program that is excellent at cleaning the system of 1000s of temporary files, including all history, old logs, and cache files. During installation, uncheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar. Before first use, go to Options > Settings > Advanced and ensure Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours is unchecked. To delete all "tracking" cookies, (which I urge you do), you must delete all cookies, so ensure the Cookies setting remains checked. Ensure you know your site credentials (user name and password) for sites you frequent; you will have to login again at next visit. ATF Cleaner is also a great cleaner and a little easier to use.
