Need to reset video resolution

Need to reset video resolution
I have an E machines desktop running Windows XP, and I have a problem I cant figure out how to solve. My monitor failed today and when I borrowed a friends monitor and hooked it up to my PC, I get a "Video input out of range" error message displayed on the new monitor. Im guessing the problem is that my friend's monitor can't accept the video resolution that my PC is feeding it, but I cant reset the video resolution through the Control panel, because I cant view my desktop.
The obvious solution I guess is to buy a monitor that can accept the video resolution that my PC is currently set to, but I would like to know if there is any way possible to somehow reset the video resolution so that I can use the monitor that my friend provided me. Am I out of luck or is there any way to somehow reset the video settings on my PC. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Try starting in Safe Mode.
