SATA HDD not recognised

SATA HDD not recognised
Hi
What I thought would be a simple task is becoming increasingly frustrating.
A computer shop added a second 320GB SATA HDD to my aging system as a slave to the existing 80GB. The plan was to load my freshly purchased XP pro onto the new HDD and tx some existing data before wiping the old dodgy xp OS from the 80GB drive which would subsequently be used as storage for digital photos.
The new HDD was added and shows as an additional disc on the disc management feature.......so the current OS recognises this new HDD.
My intitla attempts to load the new OS directly onto this new HDD were thwarted and I was advised that I could only load xp onto the master HDD and as SATA HDD's don't have a master/slave jumper duly disconnected the primary IDE existing drive so XP would load onto the new SATA HDD attachd to the serial 1 connector.
Here is the first problem its not recognised and the message no drive attached to the fasttrak controller is displayed at the load screen. The BIOS is set to auto detect.
XP starts to load and asks for 3rd party drivers (F6) and when prompted I load the floppy (Promise serial ATA RAID driver) that came with the KT4Ultra MOBO, I select WIN/XP from the options and everything starts up and reaches the point where I am asked to set up windows, partition or delete existing partitions. The only problem is that I get a message in the box 0MB disc at 1d0 on bus 0 on fasttx2K (set up cannot access this disc)
What do I need to do??
Any help greatly appreciated

Are these the drivers you have?

Did you install all SATA/RAID drivers. Often there are more than one.
Also your motherboard only supports SATA I not SATA II. If your new SATA drive is a SATA II (3.0 transfer rate) you need to set the jumper on the rear to SATA I (or 1.5 transfer rate).

Hi Thanks
I had just gotten as far as the updated drivers on the MSI website. I note that there are three related SATA RAID driver updates, Promise RAID drivers which was teh floppy that was originally supplied with the MoBo, there is a PROMISE RAID utility update and a later VIA RAID driver. DO I need to download all three?? The RAID on my particular board appears controlled by a PROMISE chip (based on my limited knowledge of SATA, RAID theory)
I will check the jumper setting on the SATA HDD, I wondered what it was used for and I am fairly sure it was set to the higher transfer rate.
Many thanks for your help and advice

Additional
Okay SATA HDD was set to 1.5 GB transfer. Windows set up will not let me load drivers from MSI web site, it reports setuptxt.oem is missing.
I think now that because the new SATA drive is recognised as an additional drive I will transfer all required saved data onto the new drive then wipe the old and load the new windows XP onto that one and start from there.
Still unclear why my system won't recognise the SATA HDD as a primary master when the existing drive is disconnected.
Is it a software problem with XP or is it a problem with my rather elderly KT4 ultra board??
Thanks
