    CD/DVD Drives

I had backed up some image files to several DVD's and I bought a 1 TB drive and decided to restore some of my more favorite ones to this drive.

I have two desktop computers. In all cases I can see the files and it will start copying and then just stop saying it can't read a file. I will try the same disk in the other computer and sometimes it will read, sometimes not. Luckily so far I have not lost any real important files. I try copying with windows explorer and a utility called total commander.

Is there anything that can be done. I have learned a valuable lesson. Whenever I created the DVD's I always checked to make sure that I can see the files on the disk. This doesn't necessarily mean that they are good.

Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated. I am on Windows XP Pro.

You are correct that just because it copied & you can see it does not mean that it is readable on a disk (cd/dvd). I had the same thing happen when I upgraded to a newer comp except that I could only get 2 files to copy off of the disk & neither of them where mine. You can buy expensive software that might work, but might not. I don't know of any programs off the top of my head but there are some with trials I might tell you if they can get files off. Try doing a search. Its good news if you can get some off. Try going through your files on the disk & copying a few at a time as there might be only a couple offending files that are corrupted & that create the error when windows tries to copy the file(s).
