Ok, so this is my first ever post here - I only just registered because I am getting pretty peed off.
Whenever I log onto my laptop (it's an acer aspire 3000) a bubble always comes up saying I need to free some disk space. I have deleted everything I don't need, but it still says I have low disk space, ie. less than 100mb all the time. Apart from deleting everything on my computer does anyone know what else I can do?
I'm expecting I'm going to have to buy a memory card or something, which I think I've already done before. If so, does anyone know where to get them and what I'm supposed to look out for. Simple terms would be great! Thanks!

Don't confuse the various types of memory. Adding RAM or a memory card will not affect the amount of disk space (another form or memory).
What version of Windows are you using?
The problem here is we need to determine (1) if you really are low on disk space and (2), what is actually generating the error.
So first, CCleaner is a great disk cleaning program that is excellent at cleaning the system of 1000s of temporary files, including all history and cache files. During installation, uncheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar. Before first use, go to Options > Settings > Advanced and ensure Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours is unchecked. To delete all "tracking" cookies, (which I urge you do), you must delete all cookies, so ensure the Cookies setting remains checked. Ensure you know your site credentials (user name and password) for sites you frequent; you will have to login again at next visit.
Now (after running CCleaner) is a great time to defrag your drive(s). Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools then select Disk Defragmenter, then defrag each hard drive. This alone may clear up your problem as often you get the low disk error when the Page File on the disk is being crowded by file fragments, preventing it from expanding as needed.
Now that your system is clean of stuff we know you don't need, go to My Computer and click once on your hard drive, then look in the details section. How much Free space is listed? And what is the Total Size listed? Do the same for any other hard drives, if present.
If the free space listed is truly low, and the drive is small to begin with (say under 20Gb) then you may need to go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and uninstall any programs you have installed that you no longer need. If you have saved pictures, videos, or songs, you may have to move them off to an external storage device.
How much RAM do you have installed? If 1 Gb or more, we can probably reduce the size of your Page File - or at least set it to a fixed size. Adding RAM will not give you more disk space, but it will allow Windows to perform more work in RAM memory, rather than using the Page File on the disk.
I'm on Windows XP. I'll try the CCleaner. Thanks for replying. I was just about to order a memory card. I'll let you know what happens.
I ran the CCleaner, which was fine.
But after I ran the Disk Defragmenter on my hard drive a message came up saying: Drive ACER (C: ) might be corrupted. To check and fix the drive, run chkdsk /f.
I'm running the Disk Defragmenter on the other drive now (Acerdata (D: )) now, but it seems to be taking forever.
I've checked to see how much free space and it says this:
Acer (C: )
Free space: 429 MB
Total space: 26.3 GB
Acerdata (D: )
Free space: 25.8 MB
Total space: 26.5 GB
Does that sound like it's worked? I really have no idea! Thanks for the help.
That's not good. I strongly recommend you immediately backup any and all critical data on your C: drive before it fails completely and all is lost. See here for chkdsk instructions. But after I ran the Disk Defragmenter on my hard drive a message came up saying: Drive ACER (C: ) might be corrupted. To check and fix the drive, run chkdsk /f.
You may have to run defrag in Safe Mode to speed it up.
What specific version Windows XP are you using? Home? Pro? SP2?
You are definitely low on disk space - on both drives. You need to purge your disks of unwanted and no longer needed items. Windows Home itself consumes less than 10Gb - so your drives are full of added stuff.
I have no idea what version it is. Home? Hmm, probably. So what happens when my C : drive fails? Am I just totally fncked?
Right click on My Computer there you will see the version of Windows installed. If your C drive fails, you will need a new drive and will have to reinstall Windows.
you could try disk checker. open my computer. right click on c: and run dsk check, it will say it cant do it as it is in use and will run next time you boot system up. that should clear corrupted files. make sure you check boxes fro windows to fix erros to
As suggested above in the link provided.you could try disk checker. open my computer
