not detecting Cd-rom
I have being having problem with a cd-rom. It used to work properly but all of the sudden it disappears from my comuter. The drive letter isn't in my pc. Cud any one tell the possible causes of something like.
-
Right-click 'My Computer' and go to Properties. Select the Hardware tab and then click the Device Manager button (if you don't see the Hardware tab, click the Device Manager tab). Double-click the "DVD/CDROM drives" level of the tree view. Delete whatever is within that branch of the tree. Reboot. Windows should automatically re-detect it when you next boot the PC up.
Let us know if that helps

I tried it it's not working. I checked bios and its not detecting. I switched ide cables its still doesn't work. but the master drive detects fine. I checked the jumpers it was correct. I thought of it might be problem with ide so I took the cable of the master drive connected it. And changed the drive to master (the one that is note detecting). And it still it didn't work.

If the BIOS doesn't see it and the cable and connector are OK then the drive itself is very suspect.
Look carefully at the 40 pins on the rear. Are any bent over or broken off?
Do you have another drive to try?
-
Yes I got another drive to try. I asked someone he said even if the cd-rom is broken it will show up in my computer. Is it true.
-
No. If your BIOS doesn't see it Windows has no chance.
-
So it means if the rom doesn't work at all it will not showup in my computer even if everything is connected properly. Which one sud I change to pio. primary or secondary ide.

If your BIOS does not see a device then Windows will not see it.
If your BIOS does not see it there is some hardware fault.
Either:
1) bad drive
2) bad IDE connection
3) bad IDE cable
4) bad power
If the BIOS does not see the drive there is no DMA/PIO issue.
If the BIOS does see the drive but your My Computer does not then this is a different question. Some possibilities here:
If you feel comfortable editing the registry, here are some steps:
Click the Start button, click Run. In the Open box, type regedit and then click OK.
Click the plus sign (+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Click the plus sign (+) next to SYSTEM.
Click the plus sign (+) next to CurrentControlSet.
Click the plus sign (+) next to Control.
Click the plus sign (+) next to Class.
Click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
Once here click File in the upper left corner and choose: Export (this key)
Export to your Documents as a backup. If needed you can go back to this file and Import it back.
Then:
On the right hand side of the window, click UpperFilters.
Click Edit on the menu bar.
Click Delete, and then click OK.
On the right-hand side of the window, click LowerFilters.
Click Edit on the menu bar.
Click Delete, and then click OK.
Click File, and then click Exit. Restart the computer normally
Also check UDMA/PIO settings under your IDE channel in the Device Manager.
If DMA is not working try PIO.

Ok that means the drive is bad. because my bios doesnot see the drive. I checked everything to conection to power. I tried hardwared check for drviers. Only thing I didn't check is the one u mentioning "Look carefully at the 40 pins on the rear. Are any bent over or broken off?". I will be checking it after connecting another drive. I will post what happens after
