    PC Stopping At Boot Up!

    Hi Guys,

Well this problem has been frustrating me all afternoon. I switch on the PC it boots up the BIOS, recognises my drives, floppy, CD then HD. Then it shows relevent controllers etc and there assigned IRQ nunmber then fails to boot into XP. I made sure all connections were plugged in and not loose. I then tried removing the RAM sticks for which I have 2*512 and then re-inserting them. Switched on.....HEY PRESTO it worked, booted up to the desktop. I tried a restart, it failed again. I then swapped the sticks over. It worked again. Tried a restart....it failed again. This has been going on all afternoon!!

Im at a loss now as to what it could be. Im thinking either ram has gone bad or something dodgy going on with motherboard.

Any help would be really appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Andy.

Ps I also reset the Bios to default settings, made no difference.

    Any beeps?

To test your RAM, I recommend MemTest86+. Select Download - Pre-Compiled package for Floppy (DOS - Win). Unzip the file to a convenient location, insert a formatted floppy disk in the floppy drive, double-click on install.bat to install. Then, with the floppy in the drive, reboot the computer. The computer should boot to the floppy and start testing your RAM. Let it run for several passes or even overnight. You should have no reported errors. A CD version is available. An excellent how-to guide is available here.
