    RAM Failure

Hi, I'm looking for some advice really - to see if anyone has had a similar problem.
I bought a pc about 6 months ago and i have just had to replace the PSU. After installing the PSU the system still wouldn't boot as the RAM was also knackered. I have replaced the RAM - but the old one (2gb, pc2100) has a sticker on it stating "lifetime Guarantee".
Does anyone know what the procedure would be to get it replaced? I mean do i contact the people who built the pc or the manufacturer of the RAM? And more to the point - would i actually get it replaced or would i be wasting my time?

    Thanks.

i've never tried it, but i do believe you'd have to contact the person who built it first though.

The lifetime warranty provided on RAM covers it for manufacturing defects in the RAM module itself. In other words, if the only problem you have is that the RAM gave up one day and you replaced it and then the PC worked, then that would show that the RAM was faulty and the manufacturer would replace it (although the company that built the PC will have its own obligations during their initial warranty period for the system).

HOWEVER, that's not what happened. You had a power-related problem and any problem with a power supply can potentially wreck anything that's connected to the PC. A power-related problem invalidates the warranty on every single component inside your PC. It's not the memory manufacturer's fault that the power supply caused problems elsewhere in your system.

The people that built the system ARE responsible for all of the parts inside the system that are covered by their warranty for the duration of their warranty. But it sounds like the system isn't under warranty any more because you've been talking about fixing it yourself.

Was the RAM "knackered" before the PSU was faulty or after?

Well, i have had various problems for the past few months. memory dumps followed by system crashing - blue screen. The computer would also shut down without warning. Also during this time if i turned the machine on while it was cold (if it had been turned off for more than a few hours) the computer would hang - ie couldn't move the mouse or use the keyboard and the screen would freeze, forcing me to reboot by switching power off at the mains.
I looked into it (a few useful posts from here) and couldn't decide if it was either my PSU or RAM - in the end the power supply went completely which made the decision for me (though i think Jephree said it was the PSU all along - with Jephree's reputation here i should've known he would be right!) when i replaced the PSU the RAM had died to.
So i don't know if the PSU problems was causing the memory to fail - or if they were both dubious to start with.

BUT - the guys who built the PC aren't that reliable from my experience so far. First of all the setup exe file was corrupt and the disk was loaded with various drivers so i had to spend a few days figuring out which drivers i needed and installing them manually. A few weeks after that i discovered the floppy drive wouldn't work at all - i just disguarded it as i rarely have use for floppies nowadays.
The power supply was a 450 watt but i replaced it with a 600 to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the help by the way!!

    Cheers

you should seriously go and have a talk with the guys who assembled your computer man. if it's up to me i'd see if there's any way i can hold them responsible since heck, it really looks as if they didn't build your PC properly.

hope you'll be able to resolve your problems soon man. keep us updated
