The sound card on my laptop is not very good. I have 2 questions:

1) can I buy better speakers which are louder? (or do speakers not work like that- does it depend on the input volume!?)

2) Roughly how much would a new sound card cost- and how difficult would it be to fit it?

Usually the soundcard is built into the laptop as part of the motherboard. So replacement is not really on.

Most computer shops sell pwered external speakers for laptops, including PC World.

I would suggest you take your laptop with you, and try some out prior to purchase..

They should make a vast improvement.
