Smile New sata hdd makes system freeze

    Hi all

This is my first post at D-A-L .I am facing a strange problem right now.I installed a 160gb Seagate SATA HDD and using Seagate disc-wizard initialized and formatted it.Since i didn't know whether my system supports 48bit lba i went for 127gb limit only. The disc wizard suggested this and i went ahead with its automatic initialization and formatting of the new drive .But this is not the problem...
My computer hangs when i try to copy say 50mb files into it.When i copy small files like 1 mb size it works but fails for large files...My computer freezes and i need to restart it .
(since size is limited to 127 gb ..i don't think "48 bit lba support" could be the cause of the problem)

Can anybody help me out !Any help would be immensely appreciated!!!

Are you running XP SP2? Even under SP1 that limit was eradicated.

There is in general no need to use any installer but check your Disk Management:

right click My Computer then click Manage then Disk Management

From Disk Management I would re-Format it to NTFS and try again.

Of course if you have placed any data on it back it up first as all will be lost.

    Thanks for the reply
    Above are my system specs
I dont think the problem here revolves around 48bit lba capability.I am restricting the new drive size from 160 to 127 gb so that even if i dont have that capability my system could work with the new drive.

and yes i did format it to NTFS (and fat32 earlier..i exhausted all types)using Disc wizard and disk management tool too...RIght now its in
NTFS 4kB 127 gb state.BUt the problem exists.

    Thank you again

And also if i continue work so that my 80gb sata and 20gb ide are active only i can work as long as i can without seeing my computer freeze. This new drive seems to be source of the problem.
Pity my less knowledge of hardware but does wrong( may be i am wrong at setting these things) primary master slave settings have any such ill effects??
    These are my settings:

    Thanks

SATA drives don't actually have Master and Slave settings. The diagnostics software that you've used is wrong to refer to your SATA drives as 3rd Master and 4th Master. The reason that SATA doesn't use Master and Slave is because there is only one drive on each SATA cable. This means that Slave drives cannot exist.

When you look at the drive in Windows XP's Disk Management screen, does it show it as a 160GB with a 127GB partition and 33GB free space? Or does it think that the whole drive is only 127GB? I would try to make Windows see it as a single 160GB partition and see if that fixes it.
