    New printer woes

Hi all, I've just bought a new Canon Pixma MP160 all-in-one and installed it to the letter as per instructions. All goes well until I'm asked to connect the usb cable, then installation fails as the printer is not recognized. I have had this problem before with a Lexmark all-in-one I bought but returned it as faulty. my old Lexmark P706 connects and prints fine when I reinstalled it. Any help would be great, thanks!

Does Device Manager show any issues with any hardware?

Hi, no, Device Manager doesn't show any conflicts at all. It does, however, show an "unknown device" under my usb controllers. I have the latest BIOS update for my board and the USB drivers are dated 01/07/2001. They are SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host controllers. Thanks

Delete the "Unknown device", reboot the PC and check Device Manager again to see if that is still showing.

Unknown device disappears but re-appears on installing the printer again.
I decided to try a Belkin usb/firewire card (F5U508) and now I don't get the unknown device warnings anymore!(Hurray!). Problem now is, the printer isn't detected by the PC during installation. I've tried following the instructions, Uninstalled all the drivers/software with the printer and re-installing. Device Manager is very happy - no !!! or unknown devices but no printer either! Control Panel shows the printer installed but I'm unable to print anythingas it says "please connect your printer". Could my usb cable be suspect? It worked fine with my old printer - Lexmark P706. Again, thanks in advance!

I've been trying to look up whether the Lexmark P706 is USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 but I haven't been able to find out. I'm wondering whether the USB cable that you have is only rated for USB 1.1. If the cable says "USB 2.0" or "High-speed USB", then it should be able to handle the new printers as well as the old one.

It may, however, be the case that the cable is faulty. This would be very unusual but certainly not impossible. You've now tried two printers and different USB ports/controllers so it wouldn't be unreasonable to say that the only thing that you haven't swapped is the cable.
