Well here goes. Had this problem last Dec. and this fix worked well enough.
The upper and lower keys 'fix'
why can I not find these listings?
Is my registry corrupt?
went to 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/Current ControlSet/Control/Class/4D36E965-E325-11CF- 08002BE10318'
the listing on the right side of the screen does not have an 'upper' or 'lower' listing only: (Default) ; Class ; EnumPropPages32 ; Icon ; Installer32 ; NoInstallClass ; SilentInstall ; TroubleShooter-0 .
I can not think of anything else it would be but this (previous) fix for the drives not appearing in My Comp.
Any suggestions on how to fix the registry issue?
P.S. Should mention comp. is a PIII 866 MHz Win2000 Pro w/194 MB of (SD)RAM
Help greatly appreciated. thanks in advance. CJE
Another try is to Uninstall the drive via the Device Manager then reboot.
This will force Windows to reload the drivers.
Yes I've seen that work several times. Never even heard of the "upper and lower keys fix" before!![]()
When a DVD/CD drive is not shown under My Computer this is often a registry alteration caused by third party burners. The fix is as follows:
If you feel comfortable editing the registry, here are some steps:
Click the Start button, click Run. In the Open box, type regedit and then click OK.
Click the plus sign (+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Click the plus sign (+) next to SYSTEM.
Click the plus sign (+) next to CurrentControlSet.
Click the plus sign (+) next to Control.
Click the plus sign (+) next to Class.
Click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
Once here click File in the upper left corner and choose: Export (this key)
Export to your Documents as a backup. If needed you can go back to this file and Import it back.
Then:
On the right hand side of the window, click UpperFilters.
Click Edit on the menu bar.
Click Delete, and then click OK.
On the right-hand side of the window, click LowerFilters.
Click Edit on the menu bar.
Click Delete, and then click OK.
Click File, and then click Exit. Restart the computer normally
I see. Thanks for that Jephree - saved it for future reference![]()
Its fixed now.
The only way I can figure out how is with 'Error Killer'.
Once I ran that program, they (the cd/dvd drives) worked again. Will save this for future reference though.
Thanks again... CJE
Thanks for the update and the thanks.
Let us know if we can help further in the future.
