Question Back up on DVD-- Possibly an incredibly dumb question

    Hi all,

This is very likely a dumb question, but I'm pretty terrible at everything to do with computers and really need some help.

My computer crashed a few days ago, and when I brought it to COMPUSA for repair, they wiped the hard drive.

They did backup my hard drive to DVD first, but I'm having trouble accessing my files on the DVDs they gave me.

When I insert any of the DVDs onto my temporary computer, the computer registers that a DVD has been inserted. When I click on it, however, there does not appear to be any content.

In order to see if the DVDs were new or had actually had anything saved to them, I tried to save another file onto one, and the computer said the DVD was full.

Is there something I'm missing here? How do I get to my files?

Again, I understand that the solution is probably really simple, but I'm truly stuck here.

    Thanks for your help!

    jrl.

PS. Both my original computer and the computer I'm using now are PCs with Windows XP.

Sounds like they may have imaged the disks which would mean that they are full as the image fills the disk.

If this is so it would be labeled as an ISO under properties.

To access such a disk one would need to boot it.

Of course I may be totally off base but that is my first impression.

Perhaps you should give COMPUSA a ring.

    Hi,

Thanks for the help! Unfortunately, I need it spelled out a little more...

What do you mean when you say boot it?

Also, if this helps, the Properties read:

    GBMPRO (D
    File System: CDFS
    Used Space: 600 KB
    Free Space: 0

Any help would be really appreciated! I'm in desperate need of something on one of the disks!

    Thanks,
    J

With the CD in the computer restart (reboot) the computer.

If your CD drive is set in the BIOS to boot prior to the Hard Drive and if this CD is bootable then the CD will start rather than Windows.

If not again I would suggest contacting COMPUSA and find out what they did.
