computer shuts down on boot up

Hi all I have a problem thats driving me nuts lol. I try to start my computer and it gets to the post screen then shuts down. I thought it might have been a heat problem and cleaned dust from the heatsink and fans changed the psu even changed the video card but to not avail it's driving me nuts. Could it be the mobo or cpu? I can even keep it going long enough to even see the bios screens. Grrrrrrrr

Thanks for the reply just tried that but to no avail. Tried another memory slot as well. Even took the battery off the mobo for 10 mins. thought that resetting the cmos might have helped but it didnt.

    do you get any beeps?

    is your hard drive ok?

before this happened had you changed any hardware software?

I get 1 beep on bootup. I have taken the drive out and connected it to another computer and it reads ok. I have even tried booting without the drive connected and it still does the same thing. I was reading the drive and then shutting down.

One solitary beep on its own indicates that the motherboard and all of its checks successfully passed the POST. So, if it shuts down straight after that, maybe it's a faulty power supply?

DOH! Sorry - you've already changed that. In which case, I don't know what to suggest. I would say that you should try starting it with as little connected as possible - remove the power cables from all drives. Take out all RAM. Remove all PCI / AGP / ISA / PCI-Express cards except for the graphics card (unless you have on-board graphics as well, in which case you can remove an additional graphics card also).

Switch it on and check that the POST fails - you should get a warning sound tell you that there is no RAM fitted.

At this point, re-fit one RAM module. Switch it on again and see what happens. What we would ideally like to see now is for it to pass the POST and then continue to the point where it says that it cannot find a boot device. If you get it that far, leave it for a few minutes to make sure that it doesn't restart or switch off. Remember that, if you walk away for a while, you'll have to keep listening for the POST beep (telling you that it restarted itself) !

Let us know how you get on
