    What exactly is your problem?

Is this the exact error message:

E:\ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

What do you do that brings it up?

    Did this just start happening?

    Were things OK before?

Have you followed and tried all the links above?

    How old is the laptop?

    Hi Jephree,

Thanks for the reply. The error message is exactly "E:\ is not accessible. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error." and this occurs when I put in either a dvd/cd into the drive. However, I noticed last night, that if i close the laptop into hibernate mode and put a cd in, when i reopen it and it starts up the cd is read. Weird! The laptop was fine before this, and it is less than a year old. I've looked at the other suggestions but I am not a wizz with the computer and am hesitant to play around with it too much as I need my computer for uni.. and can't afford to lose anything on it..

    Thanks

    Stace

    Try the Autoplay Repair Wizard:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

If that doesn't work: Assuming that you have XP: go to the Device Manager and right click the drive and choose Uninstall ... then reboot. XP will reinstall the drive and drivers.

If that hasn't fixed it there are some general ideas here:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321641/en-us

Last but not least: as the computer is less than a year old I assume that it is under warranty.

If so you should have access to free support or repair from your manufacturer.

Hey, for those who are still in the dark, I was having this problem, and found that going into hardware profiles for the CD Rom that wasn't reading, clicking on the advanced tab, and selecting "PIO only" instead of "DMA if Available" worked for me in win XP sp2

I had a generic (cyberdrive i think) cdrw model CWD099 something and this fixed it!!!
thanks for the help, hope this helps yall!

Thank you kind sir, for helping me fix my mom's laptop(i signed up just to say thanks). The Uninstalling and Reinstalling of the drive itself via the device manager solved my issue. It was so simple I feel like a noob - going to school for computers support and repair i should have thought of that simple fix. Well, thanks again
