    USB Switch Not Recognised

I have 2 PC's both running XP SP2 (one Home - one Pro). They are connected to a single USB Printer via a manual USB Switch. On one of the PC's you can plug the switch into any USB socket and it's immediately recognised as a Mass Storage Device and USB Printer Support etc. in Hardware Device Manager. On the other PC (a quite new Dell Dimension 3100) the switch is only recognised using one of the two FRONT USB Ports - on any of the four REAR USB Ports it is reported as an 'Unknown device'. I have tried deleting the device and reinstalling but to no avail.

Why only the FRONT Ports work? How can this be and is there a fix?

Best wishes to all for a healthy and peacefull 2007.

did you recieve any "drivers and utilities" disks with your PC?

if so, look for the USB 2.0 driver on them

Dell aren't that generous these days. Anyway, I assumed that USB2 support would be automatic on XP Home?

On a Dimension 3100, all of the ports should be USB 2.0. But I would be thinking along similar lines to MadMikeJT12 - it could be a driver issue. Try going into Control Panel > Hardware > Device Manager. Then delete all of the USB ports. Reboot the PC and Windows should automatically re-install them all with USB 2.0 drivers.

Let us know if that helps

Hi DJN - yes I'll give that a try (might be a little difficult due to kb and mouse being USB). I do have a USB2 Driver installer and if the above fails will give that a go also. Will now wait 'till New Year as the cry of 'nerd' is getting louder from downstairs!

Healthy & peacefull 2007 to you.

    Hi all,

Tried the various options but with no success. Even my USB2 installer was greeted with the comment 'cannot find better driver than currently installed'! Still works fine in the front USB port(s) but the rears still duff.
