CPU Fan problems
I am working on a system that seems to have a problem with the CPU fan. Any fan I put into the system will spin up for a brief moment and then stop. The system will then display a message stating the CPU is missing or not working properly. I have tried a different power supply. The system is an HP with a 1.7 ghz p4 processor. Any and all suggestion are greatly appreciated.

If you know that both power supplies are in a working state, from the sounds of things you may have a fried CPU. However it's possible there may be an overheat problem and the system is shutting down to prevent damage. Is the CPU heatsink firmly attached and relatively clean of dust buildup? You could also try reseating the CPU into it's socket.
Does this system have a floppy drive, and please indicate what O/S you're running. (ie;98, Win2K, XP Home or Pro, Vista)

Could it be anything to do with the motherboard? I mean where you plug the fan into? Just a suggestion.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried everything you mentioned. I have a different motherboard to try as well a processor. Thanks again.

Thanks to all that responded. It turns out I had 3 bad fans. Once a good fan was put into the system, all was well.
Thanks again.
