    need motherboard specs please

hello all i am fustrated..i have a dell 4600 dimension...now this computer came with 3 different model of motherboard...mine is the n2828...its an intel board but manufactured for dell...i need to know the exact chipset this board has...i use cpu z and other software to get this info but all i come up with is that its either the 845p,
865p,or the 865pe...i need to know which one it is...im wanting to upgrade the cpu from a 2.4 pentium 4 to a 3GHz pentium 4...i am pretty sure that i can only use a northwood core (512 l2 cache)...but arnt sure what the max fsb is on this board..533 or 800, or if anyone could tell me if a northwood core pentium 4 3GHz with HT technology and 800fsb with 512 l2 cache will work, ive looked on dells site but i get two different peices of info and it all confuses me...if anyone could help me i would b grateful

Theres a chipset 865G Intel Pentium 4 w/HT aswell with a 512 KB L2 cache, 533 MHz FSB etc. Check your manual & esp if you're upgrading, just take the case off and read off the printed motherboard values.

    865PE supports Intel Pentium processors w/HT 2.8GHz 800FSB.

The Intel 845P is Socket 775 w/HT Dell Optipex GX280 Motherboard.

Without knowing the exact version of the motherboard, no one can tell you what will work or not.

Which software have you used? Used SiS Sandra yet?

If software is not accurate as has never been for me, just open it up or read the manual.

With so little facts, I can't really say anymore. As an approximation, I'd say this yours: http://www.ascendtech.us/itemdesc.as...EL2Y832&eq=&Tp

OK. Take off the cover, careful not to touch anything but cables (its ok to touch them) and look for some printed writing in bold, (usually white) bigger than the rest of the writing, usually near where the CPU and its heatsink and fan will be. It will read a MAKE and MODEL and a VERSION there for your mobo.

I think the last mobo one I linked to is definitely yours.

Gack! It doesn't actually clarify. Knowing this E210882 helped! However its not the part no. but the Underwriter Lab's. regulatory ID number for Intel motherboard products. What I can tell you is the part # is CN-on2828-70821-3bf-dojr which is Dell part # as its a propriety motherboard.

What I linked before is the replacement motherboard for yours as you said. I've seen many people have problems with the same mobo as yours, revision 2.0. Google/yahoo searches return nothing and neither does the Dell website but they need the info on it. I'm thinking its a 865PE yes, but not certain.

Here's your computer manual. Look to verify which board is yours and the "chipset": http://support.dell.com/support/edoc.../series_en.htm

We only need to know the chipset because Dell modifies the rest of the board after getting them from Intel.

    Here's where it gets worse
Intel has a few mobo's that are similar chipset, some ATX and some MicroATX. After checking the above site, if you can't verify it there, can you verify your mobo here: http://www.intel.com/products/deskto...id=mbd_main+dt

Thats all I can say from this position so far I'm afraid.

yes i believe that we are in agreement with the board you linked me to...i know dell modifies the board after they recieve it, but can they mess with the cpu so that if you buy a cpu that is with in the boards specs, but from say newegg, would it not work because it wasnt purchased through dell; can they put somekind of code in the bios to only recognize cpus from dell?...or do you think that i can go ahead and order a northwood core which this board requires, pentium 4 3GHz and be good...damn dell..thay suck...thanks for your help

No, they don't make any Dell-only modifications to the processor itself or the BIOS to restrict which processors the motherboard can detect
