I have a gateway flat screen monitor and lately when I restart my computer, the monitor with work for about a second or 2 and then go black. When I turn the monitor off and back on again, the screen comes back, but only for another second or 2. This has happened before and I kept turning the monitor on and off and eventually it stayed on. However, I have not been so lucky this time and it has been over a week and the monitor still isn't staying on. Not that the monitor turns off...it just goes really black...in the right light I can kind of see the screen but it is very faint. I am running on Windows XP if that is of any importance. PLEASE HELP ME!!! Do I need to buy a new monitor or is there something I can do to fix this problem??

It sounds like the monitor's backlight is failing or has failed.

What is the exact Gateway model #?

Is it old?

Depending on its' value it may or may not be worth replacing the backlight.

The model # is FPD1530 and was manufactured in April 2003.

Most flat panel monitors carry a 3 year warranty so you're just beyond that.

That being said I see these monitors on eBay for less than $50. (US)

That being said you could buy a new monitor for what it would cost to fix this one.
