    Display problems - Black screen

I hope you can help me with this as I have searched everywhere on the internet for resolution but to no avail.

When I boot up my PC the first few screens are unreadable as there are columns of random characters, and then after the splash screen the screen goes blank or will occasionally display a pixelated screen of various colours.

I can get into the PC in Safe or VGA mode but there are yellow vertical lines on the screen.

I have an NVIDIA ti 4200 graphics card, which I presume is the problem??

There have been no significant changes to the PC set up to cause this problem, the only change I made was to update the media player.

Any help you can provide to fix this problem would be much appreciated as I can only use the PC in VGA mode at the moment.

Try loading the latest driver: (assuming) XP:

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_93.71.html

    Driver Installation Hints

    * "Download Accelerator" utilities should be disabled when downloading any drivers.

    * Do not run virus protection software in the background while installing the drivers. This prevents the driver from configuring itself properly.

    * Before installing new drivers make sure you uninstall all NVIDIA display drivers from the Windows Control Panel. Browse to the Start Menu > Windows Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and search for "NVIDIA Windows Display Drivers" or "NVIDIA Display Drivers" and select remove.

    Thanks Jephree,

I will load the new drivers but I have read lots of threads about problems uninstalling the NVIDIA drivers when updating.

I have looked in my add/remove programs and there is no reference to Nvidia, so I am wary about installing the new drivers directly without having properly removed the existing drivers.

    Please can you advise.

    Thanks

The fact that you have random characters etc in the boot screens BEFORE Windows loads up suggests to me that it's not a Windows driver issue but a physical fault in the graphics card. By all means, try the new driver but that won't make any difference until after the Windows splash screen. It sounds like you'll actually be buying a replacement card to completely resolve this (I suspect that updating the Media Player is purely a coincidence).
