Thumbs up Site Newbie Please help.

OK, i don't claim to be an expert on PC's but i normally get by.
I went to power on my PC the other day and it was completely dead. There was no voltage present on the motherboard so i went and bought a new PSU.

When i connected the PSU on the motherboard was still completely dead, so i went and bought a new motherboard. I now have the new motherboard in and it powers up in that all of the fans start to go and it looks like the PC may be trying to boot, but i cannot get any signal out of the AGP card. I thought that maybe the AGP card had also been affected so i temporarily put in a PCI VGA (still with the old AGP card in situ) but still to no avail.

Now the question, if the Processor had gone, would this stop the machine from even bringing up a signal on the AGP card or VGA? I obviously can't get into the BIOS yet to configure this as i can't see what i am doing.

Please help if you can, as not having a PC at home is a right pain in the ar$e.

    Thanks in advance!

    Carl.

ok as far as i know mate when a problem goes wrong in your comp a you can pull apart and keep buying more stuff to try and try but this is costly to the bank.
But in long run u might wanna take to a comp shop and ask them cos they can test all ya parts on there own and find the problem which some times is only way to fix a problem like your own .
I too have had this problem once with computer i build i found out my psu blow that blow my mother board that blow my graphics card so it can be a knock on effect or i hear some times u can just have ya mother board over heat and ruin all your other parts.
I would take to a shop long run will save you cash dont ask em to fix it just ask them to find the problem then go from there hope this helps.

At the risk of asking a daft question (sometimes, those are the ones that help!), does your new motherboard have an on-board graphics chip? In other words, is there a monitor connector built into your motherboard? If there is, take out the other graphics card(s) and try connecting the monitor to that one. If that gets you into the BIOS, you can then set it to use a separate graphics card instead.

Let us know if that helps

to answer your question mrspimkins, yes if your cpu is dead then it would make your entire systme dead...nothing will happen. since you already bought all the new parts except the cpu, then there is really no point in taking it to a shop since you already can have confidence that the parts work because they are new (although some do come deffective)...depending on what kind of cpu you already have (that may be dead)..you may as well upgrade the cpu to something better for the platform you are using (just a thought)..let us know how things work out

Thanks to everyone who responded, i managed to get to the bottom of it.
The LAN card must have been damaged when the PSU and motherobard went, as i went back to basics and stripped it down removing every card.
The motherboard doesn't have an on-board monitor port, so by a process of elimination after just putting in the AGP card first and then trying the other cards, i proved it to be the LAN card. I just wished i had gone down this route before spending another £55.00 on another processor which was not needed.

Oh well, a lesson learnt there i feel.

    All the best,

    Carl.
