Is my video card ok for a widescreen LCD monitor?

According to device manager (windows XP), my video card is:

    Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family

I assume this is some sort of on-board video card.

I am interested in getting a new monitor (my curren is 19"), and am looking at the widescreen (22") choices. The native resolution is usually 1680 x 1050 and there are often notes saying "make sure your video card can support this."

When I go to Display Properties/Settings, I have 2 choices in the Display dropdown:

    1) Plug and Play Monitor on Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family
    2) (Default Monitor) on Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family

The maximum resolution for choice one is 1280 by 1024. For choice 2, I have many more options, up to 1920 by 1200 (but not 1680 by 1050 - the closest to this is 1400 by 1050 or 1600 by 1200). Though I do notice that 1920 X 1200 is the same ratio is 1680 X 1050.

However, I seem to only be able to control the resolution when I select the 1st option ("Plug and Play Monitor"). If I select the 2nd option and try to set a resolution, it just automatically goes back to what I had selected on the 1st option. This makes me think that perhaps I really only have a maximum resolution of 1280 by 1024.

Given what I've told you above, will a new 22" widescreen monitor work with my computer? If there's anything else I can tell you about my system, please just ask.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

In general the Intel(R) 82915G/GAV/910GL Express Chipset Family
is an integrated motherboard chip. I have seen it used occasionally on some cards but the ID would generally ID the card and not the chipset if it were not integrated.

The fact that you have two listings under Monitors is that you either have both a VGA as well as a DVI port (or else TV out). Unless you have a monitor or TV attached to the 2nd port then no settings will take as these settings are for the second port.

From the options it would appear that this port would support the resolution with a capable monitor connected. This would mean that your new monitor would require the 2nd port (DVI). If the Display Settings are picking up on a TV out capability then you would not have a DVI port.

In a worse case scenario try the monitor and if it doesn't work then upgrade to a graphics card.

To get further details what is the make and model of the motherboard?

Also what is listed under start Run... dxdiag | Display | Device
