Is my power supply safe in Europe?
Ok, quick summary: Self-built computer that's worked fine for about 3-4 years. Moved from the US to Germany about 4 months ago. Switched the computer power supply from 115 to 240 and everything worked fine. After about 3 months of constant usage, the hard drive died (it was kind of old, a 20Gb Western Digital). A few days after, our NVidia video card was having a hard time with 3D stuff. We replaced both the hard drive and the video card and everything seemed to be great. Now it's a few weeks later and the computer suddenly wouldn't get past the POST stage. It would run its memory check and then freeze, not letting me get into BIOS. That was about 4 hours ago. Out of curiosity I went to turn it back on about 1 hour ago. Nothing. No beep codes. So I unplugged everything and hoped for a beep code along the way. Nothing.
So my question is, could the power supply which supports 115 and 240, somehow be slowly blowing up our hardware? Is switching to 240 enough? Or is my machine just a little old? Maybe the motherboard has just slowly gone bad. Both could account for the slow detereoration of our machine, but I'd just like to know if I have to figure out how to get a new power supply in Germany
I don't have any spare parts or access to any, so I'm kind of stuck with making an educated guess. We wanted to upgrade our motherboard and CPU anyway, so it's no big deal - I just want to make sure our PSU isn't killing our hardware (and whether I need to learn how to say Power Supply in German
Thanks for any suggestions!!
