copying from vinyl records to computer

I use nero7, there is a program on it to copy vinyl records to cd-rom.
My turntable uses a pre-amp to convey the music through another amp to speakers or to record to tape cassette player. I would like to record my records onto cd. I have my computer connected to the stereo unit by the video mode and I use it via a phono lead to a mini-jack socket(line-In) on a sound card. When the appropriate program opens on Nero it does not recognize the record player. Can anyone tell me where I'm going wrong

I've never used that option in Nero before but I can give you a couple of suggestions for things that I would try.

    1. Maybe Nero only detects the record player once it is actually playing a record.

    2. Maybe your line in socket is faulty or the sound card drivers are not detecting it. If you have a separate socket for a microphone input, try using that.

    3. Try recording something from the record deck using Windows Sound Recorder. If that records a WAV audio file to your PC and you can hear it when you play it back, then that proves that the sound card and connection is OK and that Nero is the problem.

Let us know if that helps
