CD RW / DVD RW Drive not working properly

CD RW / DVD RW Drive not working properly
i have a sony DVD rw DW q58a slimline drive installed on my laptop, it will read and write DVD's but will not even recognise a CD.
ive tried reinstalling the firmware, but no joy.
Any ideas?

dvds and cds use different lasers chances are the laser for the cd has given up the ghost the only thing to do is to replace it unfortunatly i dont know how to do this on a laptop hope i was some help

as far as i was aware dvd's and cd's used the same lasers on different wavelegnths

they do use different wave lenghts but as far as im aware it has two lasers however i could be wrong. very sorry if i am

since i posted this thread i have extensivelly trawled through M$ support website as the issue seemed to have arrisen while installing SP2. ive tried re-installing asapi, and even checked the registery. still no joy.
