Upon start up of my IBM Notebook 600e and after entering code number, displays numbers 163 and 173, machine then goes to large display I / O. With only the off switch working! Can anyone tell me how to make it start up?

163 CMOS error; Clock is not updating
173 Bad CMOS/NVRAM checksum
It sounds like the cmos battery is dead.

Checking the Backup Battery: Do the following:
1. Power off the computer and unplug the AC Adapter
from the computer.
2. Turn the computer upside down.
3. Remove the backup battery (see “Removal and
Replacement” section of each model).
4. Measure the voltage of the backup battery. See the
following figure.
Note: Be careful not to measure the wrong side of
the backup battery.
