Fan noise - nVidia GeForce4 Ti 4200 AGP8X?
Hi.
My nVidia GeForce4 Ti 4200 AGP8X started making some fan "groaning" noise some weeks ago and it never stopped doing so. Sometimes (mostly when I turn on the pc) the noise isnt present, after a couple of minutes it starts and usually it doesnt go away until I turn on the PC.
I've noted that if I slow the fan by a bit with my finger touching the center of the fan, the noise is eliminated but when I leave the fan untouched the noise returns.
I would like to know what possible solutions do I have for this problem.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

perhaps your fan blade is coming loose and when you put your finger on it it doesnt "wobble" i dont see why slowing it down slightly would completley stop the noise, if it just went quieter it probably would be a bigger problem. (just a thaught)
if your computer is off, when you spin the fan does it catch on anything?
-
Nope, I dont detect any noise when spinning the fan while the pc is turned off.
Now what I'm looking for is a new fan, what should I need to have in mind when buying a new fan?

if it is replacable, you need to look for size, conections (3 pin/4 pin/ power from pci slot) and also how its connected to the card (clips or screws)
try this link: http://froogle.google.co.uk/froogle?...oogle&ct=title

"if it is replacable", huh? so there are probabilities that my fan can't be replaced?
I took some pics of the graphics card, here they are:

is the fan replaceable?
////
Talking about another subject, I would like to ask how can I replace my PSU fan with another one. Here is my issue: inside my PSU, there arent any connection slots, like the red and black cables of the stock fan go directly to the psu and there is no slot and the fan I would like to put into de PSU does have a 3 pin connector and it also haves a white cable that the stock fan does not have.
I would take pics of it and post them as soon as I get them.

it looks replacable.... are those black things rubber? thet look like what i had on my case fan.... it looks replacable, just pop those black things out and be careful not to break them..... you will need a 2 pin connector.... what is the size of the fan?
in your PSU, are the wires for your fan soldered?
could you post a few pics please?

Yeah, they are kind of soldered, here are the pics, what do you think?

i would sugest you cut the soldered wire half way up and cut the end plug off the fan (leave some wire on the plug so you can solder it back if neded) strip both black and red wires and solder them together, put insulating tape around each solder point covering all bare wire.... if it works, remove the old fan and put the new one in.
have you had any experience with a soldering iron before?
-
That would be a nice solution, but I've never had experience with soldering iron.
I thought of another solution to avoid soldering iron, what if I put the fan inside the PSU but I leave the cable sticking out of it and connect it directly to the mobo?
Though, I'm not sure if this would work because my theory is that a PSU won't start without detecting a fan directly connected to it (that's a theory).

using a soldering ron is simple, jst hold the tip of iron on the joint and apply solder to where the tip meets the joint.
your solution is fine if you have a spare fan conncector on your mobo
what is the size of the fan on your graphics card? (in cm)
