Error when trying to write to dvd on either drive

    Good Morning.

I hope someone can help me, I have a sony Vaio desktop PC with windows XP and it has developed a problem in writing files to DVD. I am using the correct type of disks, and when I asked the helpfull man in PC world to check they were the correct disks, he confirmed they are and said my DVD writer is probably knackered and kindly sold me a freecom external writer. However the problem still exists which ever drive I try and burn to, no matter what type of file I am copying it says something like "error writing to drive, do you wish to retry" Is there a simple setting I have inadvertantly set within windows which prevents copying. I am not sure it it is related but I did notice that all of my picture files are marked as read only, and when i uncheck that box and then go back in to its properties, the read-only box is still ticked.

Thanks in advance for you advice.

Is this the verbatim error message:

    Error Message:
Error writing to disk for Document text : text Do you wish to retry or cancel the job?

    User Action:
Make sure that the disk has enough room for the document and that it is working properly. Then click Retry. Also, check the event log for messages that appeared about the same time as this one involving this drive or the connection to it. If you choose Cancel, the job will have to be resubmitted. If you click Cancel, the job will have to be resubmitted.
Were you ever able to write to DVD's? What DVD writing software are you using?

Look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for red X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.

How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

As to the Read Only attribute: are you using an Administrator account? Also is this Home or Pro?
