    CPU Crushing?

    Hi all,
I just replaced my CPU fan with a larger one. I have an amd 1800+. To get the old fan out I had to push quite hard on the see-saw type spring holding it in. I exchanged that with the new fan and when I boot up, I get continuous beeping.

I didn't count the beeps, I will when I get home from work. I unplugged that fan, and left the cpu in, still beeps. I took the cpu out and I start the machine and the beeping is gone. I then plugged in the new fan and still no beeps, I put the cpu back in and the beeping returns.

I guess my question is, did I ruin my cpu? Can it crush, or crack, under moderate pressure? I don't feel that I exerted enough force to ruin the cpu, but it looks like I did. Any comments?

The bleeps probably indicate there is a problem within the FSB (front side bus) of ur mainboard.

I'm assuimg that the 1.8ghz Chip has a bus speed of about 133mhz or most likely 266mhz (I'll look it up later), so you need RAM that is either the same bus speed or faster. There for you need some RAM which is PC133 or higher. Probably PC2100 would do the trick.

Failing all that the CPU bus speed is too fast for the mainbaord and so you'll have to upgrade that too.

Running the PC without a CPU fan is dangerous, but as long as it didn't actually boot, you should be fine, as the power doesn't get sent to the CPU til you see the boot screen.

Hope this helps. Either respond to this threat or PM if you need any more help
