    Question 14/14.1" screen

hi, as some of you may know, i have started another mod, the problem is, my toshiba screen is faulty... the backlight has broken and i dont know if the screen still works so i was wondering, are all laptop screens the same connection? i.e can i use a Dell 14" laptop screen instead of my toshiba satellite 1110 screen??

    Mobo info:
    I found the following numbers:
    BTK20 LA-1521
    REV: 1.0 2002-07-29

and a sticker with a barcode:
    K000000480 WK243

on the screen plug (to the mobo) it says:
    on the sticker:
    HIGH TEK
    P/N: DC025042800
    TOSHIBA 14" XGA
    J3,J4 SHORT
    REV:1.0 D.C. 02/10/23

    on the ckt board:
    CN9102191C

    Thanks
    Mike

    Hi Mike,

Unfortunately, the answer is no. Some screens will be used in different models from different manufacturers but, in many cases, even two laptops from the same model range with the same size display could use LCD panels from different manufacturers. Dell is a good example of that. I'm not sure why they use so many different types of LCD panels but they do. It's probably down to cost I suppose. Unfortunately, it makes replacing an LCD panel very difficult as you have to track down exactly the right type.

There should be another part number on the back of the LCD panel to help you find the right replacement.

An alternative option would be to buy a broken Satellite 1110 off of Ebay (etc) - find one as similar as possible - and then swap out the screen. If it doesn't work, you'll have the rest of the laptop to swap other parts out from such as the inverter and the inverter cable.

I've searched on Ebay for "1110" and a couple of cheap laptops are currently up for sale. There weren't any display panels. It might be worth contacting one of the sellers of other Satellite 1110 parts, though, and asking them if they can source a screen for you.

Do you know that the screen is actually faulty? If the backlight has gone, that normally means that the inverter or the inverter cable has packed up but you should still get a full picture when you plug in an external monitor. If an external monitor doesn't display anything, then none of the above parts should be at fault. Also, try looking at your laptop screen in a different light. I had someone give me a laptop for repair recently and they said that the display showed nothing at all but, in fact, it was just very very dim so I could deduce that the panel was OK and that it was the inverter or the cable that needed replacing.

    Hope that helps

hi, thanks for the reply, i know for definate that the backlight has broken and its not the inverter because i broke it!!!! a wire came off and i was taking the metal reflector out to see if it could be soldered back on and i didnt know the backlight was attached to it and it kind of snapped in quite a few places oops!!! i dont get any signal when i plug in an external monitor now, the vga socket has been faulty for a long time and without the backlight, i dont know if the sscreen is working or not.... with my mp3 player screen (when i fixed it before i broke it again) i could see that it was on and something was there with no backlight.

it would probably be best to replace the motherboard aswell if i was to carry on this mod in the near future.

I will look on ebay now,

    Thanks again,
    Mike

lol well i stripped the laptop (all parts... inc. mobo, fan, cpu, memory etc) and decided i wanted a laptop again so put it back together (it wasnt too hard) i repaired the cd, floppy, 1 usb and shutting down problems. Then had my mod idea... www.freewebs.com/mikejtaylor06/mod/mod2.htm

so the mobo isnt actually in any cases atm because i took it out, its just lying around waiting for screen repair/new laptop mobo and screen.

when i turn on the laptop, the fan spins, hd spins, power and battery light comes on and video chip gets warm... do you think the motherboard will work and i will only need to replace the screen?

it worked fine when the screen worked and i dont think anything has happened to it (drops or anything)

    Thanks
    Mike
