external hard drive recognition
Hello everyone, Help!
I cannot get my system to recognise i am connecting a new external USB hard drive. (To back up basically)
I have re formatted 4 times in the last week specifically to get this thing to work. PC world where I bought it from wont take it back as they have tested it and say it is working fine.
On initial connect found new hardware flashes up then it says couldnt install may not work, at least its telling the truth!
I have tried everything, swithing on/off with it fitted/unfitted. Add new hardware searches, driver management, the only place I can find anyhting to do with it is in Device manager a serial bus contoller, saying code 10 error drivers not installed, but it wont search for drivers and there was very little software with the product just Nero backitup.
Even been onto phillips they told me to try it on another computer which PC world did who told me it was ok.
System Fujits siemens scaleo pentium4 3.00ghz
Windows xp sp2
External drive Phillips spd5200cc
Thanks in advance Loz Williams

Thanx for trying, been there no show just C: + my card reader sockets, E,F G H and D CDrom drive.
The only place I find any reference is in Device manager, USB controllers when it is connected and it saye no drivers installed so I trouble shoot and get nowhere. In other words the usual plug and play windows system is not working.

I have resolved this problem. I got the steer from the manufacturer and it turned out to be a power problem. I had to fit an extra USB power cable and this made it work, could be the problem for other people aswell. Not software but a power problem.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry if I appear dumb but is a USB power cable just a cable you fit into the USB port? My computer recognises that there is a mass storage device but that is it. No E: drive and when it is plugged into the pc via usb port the computer programmes stop running, when I unplug the mp3 player they all continue as normal.
Thanks
