I didn't know if I should post this here or in the WinXP forum, but I think it is a hardware problem so I will try here.
I rebooted my PC when I cam home from work and it froze right before the memory check. After trying to reboot twice I hit the DEL key and changed the settings to Fail Safe.
That seemed to work.
Then I got to the screen that says that windows had problems shutting down last time, please choose an option to boot
Safe
Safe w/ networking
Safe/w Comand Prompt
Last Know Good Configuration
Start windows Normally
When I choose the Normall option the screen just sits there. Nothing happens.
When I choose the Last Known Config the screen goes blank.
When I choose the Safe mode I get this
multi(o)disk(o)rdisk(o)partition(1)\win dows\sys32\drivers etc. ...
multi(o)disk(o)rdisk(o)partition(1)\win dows\sys32\drivers etc. ...
multi(o)disk(o)rdisk(o)partition(1)\win dows\sys32\drivers etc. ...
multi(o)disk(o)rdisk(o)partition(1)\win dows\sys32\drivers etc. ...
multi(o)disk(o)rdisk(o)partition(1)\win dows\sys32\drivers etc. ...
Any suggestions?
This is how Safe Mode starts. Did you let it run for a few minutes? When I choose the Safe mode I get this

If so and it just freezes the next step is using your XP CD. This depends on the type of CD that you have.
If this is a manufactured computer what is the make and model e.g. Dell Dimension 4700 etc.
The manufacturer will have its' restore or recovery options.
If you have a Microsoft XP CD: boot the XP CD and press R to enter the Recovery Console.
Then choose the FIXBOOT option.
If this does not work then:
If you cannot boot into Windows I would suggest first trying the Recovery Console:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;307654
To try to fix the boot:
Assuming that your XP is on C: then:
Type:
FIXMBR C:
then enter. After that completes type:
FIXBOOT C:
then enter. After that completes type:
BOOTCFG /rebuild
then enter. After that completes type:
EXIT
then reboot.
If in the process you are asked to run chkdsk say YES.
Also after the BOOTCFG /rebuild you will be prompted to:
C:\Windows
1. Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All):
2. Enter Load Identifier: (Custom description for an operating system loading from the Boot menu)
3. Enter Operating System Load Options: (that is: /fastdetect)
Reply:
1. Yes
2. XP
3. /fastdetect
If this fails you can run a Repair Install that will leave your data intact:
