    Dead MoBo or Power Source??

A friend of mine(and i really do mean a friend) brought me his computer. He discribed a problem yesterday, and I kinda helped. His computer was shutting down after 30sec -2 min of operation. Turns out is CPU fan was not on, and it was overheating. Now he has a new fan, but the computer won't power up. The red LED on the Mobo lights up, and all the fans turn when he tries to power up. However, the front LED's won't light up, and the DVD-Rom won't open. I am confused. His the power source bad, i don't see how the mobo would effect the dvd-rom from opening, it seems as if it's not getting power. Also the HDD is not turning, even if the board and CPU were fried it would still turn wouldn't it?? Any help anyone can provide i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for your help.

Ok, i have more info. I pulled the fan off, and the processor is a AMD XP 2000, 1.6 G/hrz. Slot A, I looked at the processor and there is discolorization(sp?) on the top and bottom of the chip around the portion that touches the heat sink. I assume the CPU us bad, any ideas on the MoBo???

What is the make and model of the motherboard?

Is there only one LED on board? Green is usually better than red.

You could try an inexpensive PSU tester:

Also you could try to clean and reseat the CPU with new thermal grease:

Although it sounds pretty hopeless for the CPU.

You could get an inexpensive Socket 462 (Socket A) CPU to test as well.

If a red light on board is normally good then perhaps the board is OK but if there is a red and green then the symptoms of each should be described in the manual.
