    Reported Memory Does Not Match The Installed Memory

    Recently I purchased 1GB DDR SDRAM for my computer as I have started to use a few design programs and i hoped it would solve my slow computer.
    When i placed the RAM in the computer the computer only recognises 256 of the 1Gb of RAM.
    Have I purchased the wrong type of memory or is this something else? any help would be great.

    Spec.
    Philips freeline MT2100
    Intel Pentium 4 540 (3.2GHz, 1MB, FSB800)

    Motherboard - (all info taken from CPU-Z)
    Model: SiS-661
    Chipset: SiS 661FX
    Southbridge: SiS 964
    Sensor: ITE IT8705
    BIOS
    Brand: Phoenix Technologies,LTD
    Version: 6.00 PG
    Date: 11/04/2004

    how much RAM have you already got, how much RAM can your motherboard take?

    I have 2 slots, both "should" hold 1GB (2GB total). Currently I only have a 512 in one slot and the other is empty.

    can you try the 1GB RAM stick in slot 1 on it's own and see what that does

    It still regognises it as 256.

    have you another machine you can try it on, where did you buy it from a local shop?

    unfortunately I don't have another machine to try it on.
    Got the RAM on ebay, seller had good history so thought it would be okay?

    has the RAM got any writing on it, any chance of contacting the seller to query the problem?

    I have tried contacting the seller but no reply yet!

    does the RAM have a sticker on it, or any where does it say 1GB?
