    Rebooting PC at random

Hi there, I am very flustrated and I hope someone can help... My PC is restarting at random. Some days it is 2-3 times a day, other days it happens just once. VERY few days it goes all day without rebooting. I just off the option to "automatically restart" so that I'd get the errors. I still don't get the errors, it just cuts off and restarts.

Background: I'm using windows xp. My PC was new in Novemeber. I have JUST reformatted and it is still happening. I have just the included "parts" in the machine, meaning I haven't changed or upgraded anything yet. I have added another fan thinking it was overheating... none of that worked... expecially the reformat.

I've ran every virus scan I can find, I find nothing. I run all the spyware things, finds nothing. I have not added any new programs. All the things that are here were here when I was using the machine without troubles.

I currently have a firewall and PC-cillin on and active...

PLEASE HELP!! This is so flustrating!!

    Bobbie

Sounds like hardware which raises the question of Warranty.

What is the make and model of the computer?

Do you know the manufacturer of your hard drive?

You will find the major brand diagnostics listed here:

    http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

With a few others listed here:

    http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

Also: look in your Event viewer: rt. click My Computer then click Manage then Event Viewer.
Or: Administrative Tools/Event Viewer or Start/Run/ eventvwr
Open the system as well as the application tabs & look for X errors. Click error line for details.
Post back the source & event id & Description especially of errors that seem to coincide with this issue.
Also check the Information lines that might coincide with this issue.

How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP

    Also try running Check Disk:

    start > run > cmd
in the new window type chkdsk /f
when prompted to run on boot choose Y & reboot
this will check for & fix any disk errors.

OH WOW... Okay... I am really NOT too computer literate, so some of my questions might seem dumb...

The computer is an emachine... W3050 model

When I did the other thing you suggested I found LOTS of Red x's... None of them seem to be the same error message though So does that mean I have a ton of things to fix? Do I have to fix these one at a time?

Some of what I have are:

svchost (1012) An attempt to open the file "C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot2\edb.log" for read / write access failed with system error 32 (0x00000020): "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. ". The open file operation will fail with error -1032 (0xfffffbf8).

Hanging application FRONTPG.EXE, version 11.0.5516.0, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

Hanging application Paint Shop Pro 9.exe, version 9.0.1.0, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000. (this program works lol)

Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module jscript.dll, version 5.6.0.8833, fault address 0x0001cf74.

Faulting application rundll32.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module mshtml.dll, version 7.0.5346.5, fault address 0x00116946.

The Application Management service terminated with the following error:
The specified module could not be found.

The IP address lease 192.168.1.64 for the Network Card with network address 0008A18E4C13 has been denied by the DHCP server 192.168.0.1 (The DHCP Server sent a DHCPNACK message).

The errors are application errors or service control manager.

Those are just a few... but they are greek to me. I'd appreciate it if you could help... I don't have the funds to have the PC serviced so I've gotta attempt to figure this out on my own.

    Thank you again!

    Standard Warranty
Every new eMachines Desktop and Notebook PC is protected by a standard One-Year Limited Warranty (pdf) from date of purchase. The standard one-year limited warranty offers:
One-year guarantee on Parts and Labor.
    One-year technical support via telephone.

    http://www.emachines.com/support/warranty.html

My first suggestion is to run a diagnostic on your hard drive. To do this we need to ID it. Go to the Device Manager: Start/Run/ devmgmt.msc
Click the + next to Disk Drives: what is listed?

That being said you might want to call eMachine as it should be free for you.

    I have 5 thing:
Generic USB CF Reader USB Device
Generic USB MS Reader USB Device
    Generic SD Reader USB Device
Generic USB SM Reader USB Device
    ST380011A
    WDC WD 1600-BB-00GUA0

I will try to give emachines a call. I'm afraid to because when I did that with the Dell laptop we have they made me reformat. I do not want to reformat this PC again... I JUST did it less then a week ago...

First off I would remove the USB drives just to eliminate them from the equation temporarily.

I am assumint he WDC (Western Digital) is your main boot drive. We can run this diagnostic:

Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for DOS (Floppy)

Edit: I also now see there is a Seagate (ST) drive in there as well:

    SeaTools Desktop
