Angry Printer says no cartridges but all full!

    Hi !
I am really having a hard time with my PC and now my printer - give me strength!
    Anyway, I have a Brother MFC 210C printer/fax/copier.
I recently had a message on the display that said "Cyan empty - please replace."
I checked the cartridge and although low, it seemed to have enough ink.
I bought a replacement cartridge, just in case, and replaced the old one.
When I closed the lid, the message came up as "No Cartridges."
After fiddling about and switching the machine back on, the message went back to the original "No ink in cyan - please replace"
Now I know this can't be right 'cos its full. I've been onto the Brother website which was pretty useless and gave no guidance to troubleshoot this issue.
Thats why I am coming to you guys.
Please help if you can. If not, it looks like I will have to return it to the dreaded PC World and we all know what a shower of s***e they are!

    Cheers!

    Hello KevH

As with most printers when new, it came with OME cartridges, after running out of ink you go an buy an orignal replacement and there is never a problem, sometimes you have to register/match the ink cartridges but in most cases this should be automatic upon installation of OME's

There is a bit of electronics on the print head that gives a rough indication of ink capicity when you click on printer properties but only with OME's, if you remove and replace the same OME cartridge, levels may not show again.

If you buy a decent compatible, in most cases they work just fine but they very rarely will give an indication on ink capicity, the first you know of it is poor print quality, banding and so on.

The same result if you have an OME refilled, ink capicity indication rarely works.

I'm assuming your purchase is non-OME, unless there is a fault with your new cartridge or print quality is poor, it probably is working just fine even tho' the indicator shows otherwise.

Kev, the ink indicator is so poor at what it does, do with out it, don't buy OME cartriges unless you have to, go to www.cartridgeworld.co.uk, find a store nearest to you and get your OME cartridge refilled there, it does save you money as long as it ain't a trek getting there and everything is guaranteed.

As it happens today I had to have two OME cartridges refilled for one of my HP printers.

The colour one from Staples or PC World is £34-00, cost me £13-00 to refill, £10-00 for the black compared to £23-00 and as always they work just fine, the ink level for the black is a no show but the ink level for the colour cartridge is working just fine, this time around.

There is sometimes a slight degrading on the colour side of print quality with a refill but it's slight and unless your a purest, who gives a damn, it's minor.

An OME refill is general good for five refills after which time the print head degrades.

There has been a bit of an uproar over this pratice of non-OME not registering or showing ink levels.

Printer manafactures say it is for our own good, assuring we get the best print quality,
B*LLOCKS, a lot of non-OME exceed the OME specs' so they should work.

I believe in certain states in the USA this pratice is illegal, as it is in some parts of Europe.

'EJUS, why are you buying from PC world in any case?

    Hi Johanus,
    Thanks for the reply.
OME's? If that is own make or something similar, I did by Brother cartridges so in theory this should have worked. I do get your point, though.
As for PC World, well, I guess you can say I've learned the lesson there!
I am going to go back there today, as the printer is still under warranty, and can't wait to hear the tales of woe and despair they will come out with.
I'll post back to inform of result!

    Cheers.

Hello KevH, OME= orignal manafactures equipment.

Yes your cartridge should have worked as long as the printer reconises it, hmm---fault with printer maybe.

Nothing wrong with the Brother brand, their laser printers are excellent.

Yes, nothing more one wants on a Friday then to be force fed b*llsh*t based on indiffrence by PC world.

But sometimes PC world takes mercy and spares us that.
