Please help, red processing LED light?

My computer will not run anymore, and the only way to turn it off is through the back switch, the power button no longer works. The LED light that signals the computer is processing is turned red and does not flash, it just stays on. It happened after I had changed monitors, but I dont think it has anything to do with that. I checked everything inside, and its all fixed in properly, but no signal will go to my monitor, nor will the computer boot up at all, it just stays there with that red light, and you cant even turn it off through the power button, please help... what does this mean?

So everything was fine before the monitor change?

Is the monitor VGA port on-board?

How old is the computer? It sounds like the motherboard is not getting sufficient power.

You can get an inexpensive PSU tester if you are sure that all the connections are OK.

I would strip the system and reinstall the 24 pin PSU plus the 4 pin ATX (if relevant).

Use only one stick of RAM in slot 1. Graphics Card (if not on-board). CPU. Nothing else. Will that boot the BIOS?

The computer is a few years old, I recently put in a new graphics card (Rage 128) and exchanged a 64mb ram stick with a 128 one. It was all working fine before my monitor change though, and the monitor is all I changed, I do use a surge protector, and I have a TV, Alarm clock, PC and Monitor all plugged into it, is that too much for one surge protector to handle?

Ok, it must be getting enough power, because I plugged it into its own outlet and the same thing happened...

What I meant about power is a failing PSU.

That would be why your front panel switch is not working. (assuming the connections are good).

A failing PSU is not an on/off issue. It could not be supplying the proper power to the board.

Can you go back to on-board VGA or else your old graphics card?

But I dont see how it was working before... with my 128 bit graphics card... I do have a spare PSU... should I install it and try it out? For future reference, does the light below the power light always turn red with a power problem?

As I noted above stripping the system would be my first test.

Changing the PSU would be a good next step.

Cases depend and vary but usually a solid red LED indicates a BIOS boot failure i.e. nothing is working.

It could be bad RAM or CPU or PSU or connections of any or all of the above.

If you are not getting any beeps it would indicate even further a power issue.

Nope, I am beepless too I stripped most everything, except the drives, and still the same issue... I'll go ahead and swap PSUs... I hate changing those though, pain in the rear...
