Re: Wireless card/router different makes
is your PC coneccted to the router with a cable?
have a look in the linksy booklet it should have a default IP address it may even be http://192.168.1.1 this default IP address should get you to the homepage of the router where you can set up what machines have access to your wireless network
-
Yes the PC is connected to the router with a cable- i connected it to the slot which says "internet" and the one which says "1" as i wasnt sure which was right!. but neither worked.
I will have to check the booklet later. That link still does not open. (http://192.168.1.1 )
silly question... i have a cable linking the router to the back of the PC....
Should the cable be linked directly to the modem?
If so what wires must i remove from the modem... ?
One goes from tha back of the PC to the "USB" port and one goes from the "LINE" port to the "DSL" connecters (next to which is an unused "PHONE" outlet as we are now on broadband.
have i totally messed this up!?!?
cheers

has your moden got a (RJ45) ethernet socket?
you need to connect the modem to the router using the WAN port on the router with an ethernet cable and an ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports to the PCs network socket.
once you done that try ipconfig again

Thanks for your help on this.
Im a newbie- so all these ports totally confuse me.
When you say " WAN port on the router" is that the one which says "internet" on the router
and when you say "LAN ports to the PCs network socket." does the LAN mean "1" on the Linksys router?
Thanks

just had a go...
the "PCs network socket" is that a different shape to both a USB and an ethernet socket?
the only thing tha fits the PC network socket is a DSL dongle thing i received when we went broadband...
-
the network socket on your PC should be a RJ45 socket (looks like a phone socket) the router should have about 5 sockets 1 input (WAN) and 4 output (LAN)
where does the DSL dongle connect to?
what sort of modem do you have?
-
Modem is: SAGEM F@st 800
Yes i see the 5 outlets on the router so now know what WAN and LAN is !
umm The DSL dongle connects to an extension cable which connects to........ i think the phone line from when we used to have dial up!?!
-
your modem doesn't have a ethernet connector only USB, I think your going to have to get a modem that has a RJ45 socket
Ethernet is better the USB it uses less resources and is more stable

Ok. Thanks very much for your help.
