? re:using an old PC temporarily

My new system is being shipped back to HP for repairs. I was thinking I could temporarily use my old system. There are major differences between the two. I don't think any 2 features are the same - new one is upgraded from top to bottom.

I want to know what I can expect as far as the "issues" I may encounter. The MAIN difference is going to be the old one used Dial up/AOL. The new one uses Ethernet/Comcast Cable.

But, we're also talking about Windows 98 vs. Win XP Pro
    512mb memory vs 1gb
Floppy & CD "player" drives vs CD/DVD writer drives
Windows probably NOT up-to-date vs. Automatic updates
Last used November 2005 vs Last used Right Now!

I'm trying to come up with a way to stay connected and be able to work on my websites for the 8-10 days I will be without my PC.

I tried to simply put the old hard drive in the "place" of the new tower. With the use of a wireless mouse & keyboard I really don't want to mess with those configurations - besides I can't find my instruction manual! So what I suppose I will do is simply plug the ethernet cable into the old one. (I assume the "3rd phone slot" is for the ethernet, right? It has the icon of 2 PCs wired to 1.)

So am I totally out in left field? Should I just grin and bear it and maybe take an 8 to 10 day vacation?

Sorry if this is too inane for this forum.

"I tried to simply put the old hard drive in the "place" of the new tower."

What do you mean by this?

If you are just going back to your old system then it should work as it did.

If you are talking about swapping hard drives that is a different scenario.
