Hi
I'm having a problem with an IBM 600E Thinkpad
On switching on, the screen ends up with a message saying Error. On clicking on OK the date and time come up for resetting. On resetting and clicking OK a screen comes up with a blue rectangle in the middle containing a circle with off underneath, an arrow to the right and a vertical bar with on underneath. There is no means to click anything.
On switching off and on again the clock needs resetting again.
Any ideas?

Are you using the AC adapter? Perhaps also remove the battery.
There might also be a motherboard battery but I haven't found that info

Battery test - ThinkPad 600/EAttention
You should take corrective actions when the battery status
indicator is blinking orange, and your computer sounds three
consecutive beeps. (If your computer enters suspend mode
because of a low-battery condition, data in memory might be
lost.)
Immediately connect the AC Adapter to the computer.
Then take either of the following actions:
To continue your work with the AC Adapter, press the Fn
key.
or:
To continue your work with a fully charged battery pack, do
the following:
1. Replace the battery pack with a fully charged one. (See
the User's Reference.)
2. Press the Fn key.
3. Disconnect the AC Adapter from the computer.
If you do not take corrective actions within about 30 seconds, the
computer will enter suspend mode.
Do not leave the computer in this condition for an extended
time. Data in memory will be lost.

It is the motherboard (or CMOS) battery that holds system information like the hard disk configuration and date/time that need to be remembered when the system is powered off. Booting a system and finding that the date/time has been forgotten is almost always indicative of a dead motherboard battery as Jephree advised![]()
