computer underclocking itself
I have an asus a7n8x-deluxe MB and a xp3200 cpu lately its been shutting off , then sometimes i have to wait a while to turn it back on . my temps run between 45 and 56 C . Usually cpu runs at 2.2 ghz , but lately after it shuts off it underclocks itself to 1.835 ghz ??????? I`m lost , do i have a heat issue ,,, processor going bad ? Oh it will shut down while it`s clocked at 1.835 ghz it just takes a little while longer ,, most of the time.
any ideas please..............

It sounds like heat but your temps are not that high. The fact that it needs to cool somewhat before restarting reiterates a heat issue however. The clock differential could also be a failing CPU.
How old is it? Have you opened the case and cleaned? Checked the fan? etc.
Does it stop no matter what you are doing or only during high CPU usage? Games; Video; etc.

i just reset the rtc memory the guy at asus told me that might help ,,, there for about one hour i`d go into my bios and it would shut off as soon as i moved the arrows to go through bios menu. Well when i restarted cpu it clocked itself to 1.01 ghz. .....
It does not matter if i playing games or what not it shuts off. at 2.2 ghz its very unstable , 1.8 it shuts off priodically at 1.466 it seems to be more stable .. this is killing me the people at amd told me if processor is bad cpu will not run at all ,, they seem to think it is a motherboard issue .... i called asus they think it is a processor issue .... eeerrr. amd say`s the cpu will not underclock itself . ???? asus says there must be a reason it is underclocking itself . but they dont know what they seem to think its a heat problem my cpu is pretty clean , i try my best to keep it up ,,, maybe once every two weeks i blow it out sometimes longer but not much. amd says the boiling point of the chip so to speak is 85 degrees C. ... my cpu comes no where close to that I dont think it ever hit 60 , ,,, I`m thinking motherboard or processor.

Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Any new hardware and or software?
How old is the computer? What about the PSU? Do you have another that you could try?
My only other thought would be to update or reload the BIOS:

Motherboard > Socket A(462) > A7N8X/A7N8X Deluxe > Athlon XP 3200+(400 MHz FSB)(Model 10)(Barton) >
A7N8X Deluxe BIOS 1009 for PCB revision 1.04, and 1.06 only
Support AMD Sempron CPU
Patch 3D Labs AGP card compability issue
Update SATA ROM

Just to eliminate the heat factor, could you perhaps open the case and place a large fan to blow into it? However, if opening your case voids your warranty, don't do it.

I was on the phone for about an hour with asus last night , they seem to think its a memory problem or cpu problem. my friend has the same motherboard i`m going to swap memory if that dont work I am going to take processor out and put in his . Ive only had my cpu for maybe close to 3 years , i put a nvidia geforce 7800 gs in and a creative sb xfi card in not too much new software though. I will post what i figure out tonight about swapping processor and memory.
thank you

Well I went and bought a new motherboard and processor and it works great ,,, no problems what so ever. AMD 64 X2 4200+ AND AN ASUS A8V MOTHERBOARD.
I`m happy with it ,,,,,, solved my problem anyway. my friend is currently running my old processor on his cpu with no problems ,,,,, so it must be motherboard issue.

I RMA`d my MB to ASUS they fixed it I guess the problem was the blue IDE plug. dont ask me how that would underclock cpu maybe it saw it as a problem and underclocked so not to cause more damage?
