Is this a new problem? Were things working OK previously? Any new hardware and or software?

If this is a new problem try a System Restore to a point prior to the problem:

start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

You could also Uninstall the drive via the Device Manager: Start/Run/ devmgmt.msc and then reboot. This will force XP to reinstall its' drivers.

this is a new problem, but i havent installed any hardware/software since it has started (1 week ago?) i have uninstalled the drivers and got the latest ones. that did not work so i tried to roll them back, but there was no previous driver. i will look at the link you posted, and if all else fails i'll try the system restore.

    thanks for your help.
